Holy Redeemer School offers kindergarten through 8th grade education for about 200 students, mostly from low income immigrant families. Few of these students come from Catholic families; likewise Holy Redeemer's programs serve mostly children and adults who are not members of Holy Redeemer Church. Holy Redeemer provides recreation, tutoring and youth services to hundreds of children, both from the school and from the neighborhood. Holy Redeemer also offers English, computer and literacy classes for adults. Every Wednesday evening, the school provides to the Asian community a free clinic offered by volunteer medical personnel from Jefferson University Hospital in designated rooms in the Angelus House.
For 80 years Holy Redeemer School has educated children of immigrant families. Many of our children speak English as a second language. The large majority of our children come from low income families. Yet our school produces graduates who attend the best high schools in Philadelphia and who usually go on to college and a successful career. The success of our students is the best advertisement for our school.
We educate about 200 children in grades kindergarten through eight. Not only is our school a superior institution of learning, we also create a happy "family-like" environment. Our children love their school and our graduates tell us that they remember their elementary school days fondly.
Holy Redeemer School has received full accreditation from the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools in 2006, quite an achievement for an inner city Catholic school with limited resources. It is a testament to the hard work of our faculty and our students and parents.
In a 2015 ranking by Great Philly Schools of all Philadelphia elementary schools (300 in all) Holy Redeemer was ranked 7th. Holy Redeemer was ranked 3rd of all Philadelphia Catholic elementary schools. These rankings were based on verbal and math testing scores, safety and attendance.
The latest distinction was a recognition by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia in 2021 as one of the top Catholic elementary schools achieving high scores in both Growth and Exceeding Potential.
Many of our students have graduated onto highly academic secondary such as Central, Palumbo, Science Leadership Academy, Catholic High Schools, and collegiate schools such as University of Pennsylvania, Harvard University, Yale University, Drexel University, St. Joseph's University, Stanford University, UCLA, and MIT. They have also earned prestigious academic scholarships such as the Bill Gates Scholarship and others totaling many millions of dollars. They have matriculated into distinguished careers as doctors, lawyers, engineers, teachers, principals, entrepreneurs, leaders, and professionals.
Holy Redeemer School offers a quality education for an affordable tuition. Our tuition is lower than the average for Philadelphia Catholic elementary schools. We are able to serve the children in our school because of generous benefactors who supplement with their donations what the parents can pay for tuition.
